NJ Transit Bus 30

New Jersey Transit has decided to breakup its Number 39 bus route into two pieces.  The Number 39 bus which used to serve North Arlington, Kearny, Harrison, Newark and Irvington will now only serve North Arlington, Kearny, Harrison and Newark.  The new bus 30 route and schedule is available on the New Jersey Transit website

I applaud New Jersey Transit's change to the Number 39 bus line.

I am disappointed however that New Jersey Transit's management did not explore the history of the Number 39 bus line before it made its decision both on renaming the bus line as it relates to Harrison and the new bus' route.

Before Irvington was added to the bus route and before the Jackson Street bridge was closed for repairs (in the early 80's?), the Number 39 bus line route took it into the Ironbound Section of Newark and provided an important connection between the Ironbound and Harrison communities.  New Jersey Transit should have taken the opportunity to restore the traditional service between the communities.

In addition, New Jersey Transit should not have changed the bus route number.  The Number 39 bus line has been in existence since trolleys were used along its route.  The Number 39 should have remained with its original route (Ironbound Newark, Harrison, Kearny, North Arlington) and the new Number 30 designation should have been given to the Newark-Irvington bus route.

The bus' route should have been extended along South Frank E. Rodgers Blvd past the Path station, the New Red Bulls Stadium and over the Jackson Street Bridge to the Ironbound Section of Newark.  The bus could ventured along Jackson Street and then onto Ferry Street as it traditionally did for years.  Or the bus could have turned onto Market Street then made a left onto VanBuren Street proceed under the Jackson Street bridge overpass along Raymond Boulevard on its way to Penn Station.  This more traditional route would be beneficial to both the Ironbound and Harrison communities.

I am also hoping that New Jersey Transit discontinues the use of its accordion buses which cause traffic havoc because they fail to turn into the designated bus stops.  In addition, the bus stops could be shortened providing much needed parking spaces for Harrison, Kearny and North Arlington.
