New Harrison Path Station Needs Revision
Daily Harrison covered the story and has some video of the new trains on its website. Daily Harrison also has the conceptual drawing of the new improved Harrison Path Station on its site. Port Authority Deputy Executive Director Susan Bass Levin (the former DCA Director), previously visited Harrison to unveil the new Harrison PATH station. I attended the meeting and asked whether the Port Authority had plans to provide additional lanes for traffic under the train overpass on Frank E. Rodgers Blvd South. The answer surprised me. The Port Authority had not asked Conrail, the owner of the tracks and overpass, for permission to make the overpass accommodate an additional lane of traffic in each direction. Although Susan Bass Levin unveiled conceptual drawings of the new Harrison station, the project is still in the drafting stage. While the project is on the drafting table, I suggested at the meeting that the Port Authority ask Conrail for permission to expand the overpass. Senators Lautenberg and Menendez could help secure federal funding for the expansion of the overpass.
For years, the Port Authority has ignored the Harrison Path Station and refused to make major improvements to the station. While I welcome a new Harrison station, I think that the Port Authority should hold more public sessions to obtain input from residents and commuters on what the new Harrison Path Station should contain. I want at least three lanes of traffic each way under the overpass since my commute takes me under the PATH tracks everyday.
I also hope that the Port Authority treats the property owners whose property will be taken through eminent domain to accommodate a larger station platform better than the Harrison Redevelopment Agency did our former redevelopment zone property owners.
