Election Day Early Voting on Fri. 6/2/2023 through Sunday

Election Day for Democrats and Republicans is on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. For those who prefer to cast their votes in advance, early voting will commence on Friday, June 2, 2023, and will continue through the weekend on Saturday, June 3, and Sunday, June 4. The Town of Kearny, NJ and Jersey City, NJ, are the nearest early voting locations for Harrison residents.  There is additional Early Voting information later in this article.

There are several offices up for grabs on Election Day. The most contested races locally are for the County Executive and the County Commissioner offices, with the Hudson County Democratic Organization facing off challengers from the Progressive Democrats of Hudson County.

County Executive Position

For the County Executive position, the candidate for the Hudson County Democratic Organization is Craig Guy, while the Progressive Democrats of Hudson County have put forward Eleana Little.

County Commissioner (formerly Freeholder)

Meanwhile, for the County Commissioner (formerly called County Freeholder) position, the Hudson County Democratic Organization's candidate is Albert Cifelli, while the Progressive Democrats of Hudson County have Alex Valdez as their candidate.

Harrison Council Candidates

While the County Executive and County Commissioner races are likely to be hotly contested, the incumbent Harrison Council members are running unopposed. Maria Caamano is running unopposed for the 1st Ward, Eleanor Villalta for the 2nd Ward, Delfim Sarabando for the 3rd Ward, and Michael Dolaghan for the 4th Ward.

Deadline for Submitting to Run in November

It's worth noting that Tuesday’s Primary Election Day is also the deadline to submit petitions to run for council in Harrison as an independent candidate in the November 2023 General Election. Those interested in running for council must get their petition signed and submit it to the Hudson County Clerk, 257 Cornelison Avenue, 4th Floor, Jersey City, NJ, up until 4 p.m. on June 6, 2023, in order to be on the November General Election Ballot. So if you want to run for Council in Harrison make sure you get your Petition signed and submitted on a timely basis.

Early Voting Details

It's a time for voters to make their voices heard, and to ensure everyone gets an opportunity to do so, a variety of voting options will be available.

The Early Voting schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 4th: Noon to 6 p.m.

The Kearny Early Voting Poll Location is at the Kearny Town Hall, 402 Kearny Avenue, Kearny, NJ.  There are four Jersey City locations as follows,

You can cast a ballot for the Harrison Election in any of the Early Voting Poll locations.  You simply have to identify yourself and that you are a Harrison Resident. You will be asked to confirm your information on an electronic voting book and then sign before receiving a voting slip to insert into the Voting Machine slot to get the Harrison ballot on the voting machine.

In Person Voting

If you're a traditionalist who prefers voting on Election Day, the polls will be open on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.  You can locate your Voting Poll Location by going to the website LocatePoll.com and putting in your address and zip code to find your poll location.  Harrison’s zip code is 07029.

Vote By Mail

The State of New Jersey also offers a mail-in voting option for those who'd like to avoid the polling stations altogether. If you have requested a Vote By Mail Ballot, you can mail it in any time prior to June 6th. Alternatively, you can drop off your sealed Vote By Mail Ballot at the Hudson County Board of Elections, located at 257 Cornelison Avenue, 4th Floor, Jersey City, NJ, up until 8 p.m. on Primary Election Day.

Please note, when dropping off your mail-in ballot at the Hudson County Board of Elections, you will be required to show a form of identification such as a Driver's License. A passport, however, will not be accepted as a valid form of identification for this purpose.

Ballot Drop Boxes Locations

An additional option for Vote By Mail ballots are secure Ballot Drop Boxes. There is one in Harrison located at the Harrison Town Hall, 318 Harrison Avenue in the rear entrance of the building on Cleveland Avenue side of Town Hall. In East Newark located at the East Newark Borough Hall, 34 Sherman Avenue, in the front of the building. In Kearny located at the Kearny Town Hall, 402 Kearny Avenue, in the front of the building.  There are additional Ballot Drop Boxes throughout the County of Hudson.  You can use any of them to drop off your sealed ballot. You don’t have to use the Harrison Ballot Box to Vote in the Harrison Election.

Although the Ballot Drop Box offers another accessible and secure way for Harrison residents to ensure their votes are counted in the Election, mailing your ballot is just as secure due to Federal law that provides Federal charges for anyone tampering with the mail especially Mail in Ballots.

As we approach this pivotal event in local governance, it's crucial that every eligible voter has their say. Whether you choose to vote early, on Election Day, or via mail-in ballot, your participation is an essential part of continuing our Democracy.
