Harrison Fire Dept.’s Quick Response Extinguishes Blaze In Apt. Bldg.
Aug 03, 2024On Thursday, August 1, 2024, a fire broke out at the luxury apartment complex known as Harrison Collection, located at 300 Somerset Street in Harrison, NJ. The Harrison Fire Department’s Battalion 1 was the first to respond, swiftly arriving on the scene with Fire Engine 1, Fire Engine 4, and Ladder 1. They were soon joined by mutual aid firefighting units from Kearny, East Newark, and Jersey City, ensuring a robust and coordinated effort to combat the blaze.
The fairly new Harrison Fire Department’s Ladder 1 played a crucial role, with firefighters using it to reach the roof of the building to cut a ventilation hole, as captured in a video from outside the building. From the outside, there was visible fire damage on the 2nd Floor of the building directly below where the Harrison Firefighters were cutting a vent hole on the roof and may have gone up to an upper floor. Preliminary reports suggest that the fire was limited to a single apartment unit within the 275-unit complex. Smoke and water damage may have extended to other units next to the apartment.
Built in 2011, Harrison Collection is a significant part of Harrison’s redevelopment zone. This area was transformed from an industrial zone into a residential community, and features ground-floor retail spaces and luxury apartments, providing convenient access to the newly renovated Harrison Path Station for easy commutes into Newark, Jersey City, and New York City. The complex, previously known as Harrison Station, is owned by Ironstate, a prominent developer in the region.
Ironstate, responsible for several major projects in the area, is led by principals David Barry and Michael Barry. Under their leadership, the company has been instrumental in transforming Harrison’s landscape with high-end residential and mixed-use developments.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Harrison Fire Department. As of now, there are no details available regarding how the fire started or the extent of the damage. Thankfully, it appears that the quick response from the Harrison Fire Department and the building’s fire suppression system helped in containing the fire, preventing more extensive fire damage.
Residents of the Harrison Collection and the broader community are urged to stay informed as more details emerge from the ongoing investigation. The prompt and effective response from the Harrison Fire Department and their neighboring counterparts highlights the importance of inter-departmental cooperation in ensuring public safety.
