Harrison Mourns Antonino "Nino" D’Angelo A Beloved Community Icon
Mar 17, 2025
The Town of Harrison has lost one of its most cherished figures. Antonino D’Angelo, known as "Nino" to all who knew him, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the age of 74. His passing leaves a deep void, not just in his family, but in the hearts of the many friends, neighbors, and patrons who were fortunate enough to know him.
For more than four decades, Nino was the heart and soul behind Nino’s Pizzeria, formerly known as Mr. Bruno’s, in Harrison Plaza. His restaurant was more than just a place to grab a meal—it was a community hub where everyone, regardless of status or background, was treated like family.
A Life of Hard Work and Dedication
Born on May 14, 1950, in Italy, Nino immigrated to the United States in 1963 at the age of 13. Like many immigrants, he started with humble beginnings, first working as a butcher before venturing into the pizza business. Around 1968, he and a family member, Santo D’Angelo, opened a pizzeria in Sunnyside, Queens.
In 1980, Nino brought his passion for food and people to Harrison, NJ, where he opened Mr. Bruno’s in Harrison Plaza. Eight years later, in 1988, he rebranded the establishment as Mr. Nino’s. For the next 34 years, his restaurant was more than a business—it was a haven for all who walked through its doors. From local officials and business owners to police officers, firefighters, teachers, and everyday residents, Nino made everyone feel important and welcome.
To Nino, giving wasn’t an obligation—it was simply who he was. His generosity stretched far beyond Harrison, touching lives in Kearny, Newark, Belleville, and beyond. If there was a local fundraiser, a struggling family, or a nonprofit in need, he was always the first to step up and help.
While Nino loved his restaurant and the people he served, his greatest joy in life came from his family—especially his grandchildren, whom he adored. He carried that same love into the community, treating customers not just as patrons but as extended family members.
Through his kindness, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his craft, Nino made the world a better place. As the people of Harrison and beyond mourn his loss, they also celebrate a life well lived—one that left a lasting impact on countless lives.
