Harrison's Hot Dog Stands Celebrate National Hot Dog Day
Jul 20, 2022Wednesday July 20, 2022 is National Hot Dog Day, a celebration of a convenient food to grab and eat that we fondly associate with family barbecues, Fourth of July and baseball games. A Hot Dog is a symbol of Americana.
Of course, the former Beehive of Industry, Town of Harrison has two hot dog stands. Joey Mac’s Food Truck is located at 101-103 South Frank E. Rodgers Blvd and Hot Dog Hut is located at 756 Harrison Avenue, Harrison.
Both of these hot dog stands are featured on Your Harrison’s Restaurant page. Be sure to patronage one or both and let us know what you love about each in our Community Discussion Board. The Hot Dog has its roots in Germany. German immigrants made very good sausages. In the late 1800s, there were very large communities of German-Americans on the east coast of the United States. Many German-Americans were farmers and brought to the United States their sausage-making skills One German immigrant, Charles Feltman, began to sell German sausages called dachshund sausage. The sausage got its name because its shape looked like a dachshund dog. Someone converted dachshund to “hot dog” and an American culinary tradition began.
Charles Feltman circa 1870 began to sell his “hot dogs” at Coney Island Beach in New York. When someone asked him to put the “hot dog” sausage in bread so it would be easier to carry and eat, Feltman had the business savvy to give out a free bun with the hot dog. He sold over 3,600 hot dogs in a bun that year. The rest is history.
