Harrison Street Cleaning Hiatus: What You Need to Know About Parking
Dec 18, 2024Starting Monday, December 23, 2024, residents and visitors of Harrison, NJ will experience a break from the usual street cleaning schedule. The Town of Harrison has suspended street cleaning activities until Monday, January 6, 2025. at 4 a.m. This two-week hiatus, however, doesn't provide a free pass for prolonged parking.
Under New Jersey law, a vehicle left in the same public location for two consecutive days is considered abandoned and may be subject to a fine and towing. Specifically, vehicles can be deemed abandoned if left on a public street for more than 48 hours or on any public highway. For private property, the period is extended for 30 days if there is no property owner’s consent to allow the vehicle to remain on the property.
This means residents cannot leave their vehicles parked in the same spot throughout the street cleaning suspension without risking penalties and a towing of their vehicle.
Even with the suspension of street cleaning, it's important to manage vehicle parking responsibly to avoid being ticketed for going overtime on parking meters and/or parking in No Parking Zones, Loading Zones, and/or in front of Fire Hydrants. Vehicles visibly inoperable or with expired registration for over six months are also at risk of being classified as abandoned. The latter vehicles are subject to fines between one hundred dollars and five hundred dollars and subject to being towed which has its own set of costs.
The hiatus might raise concerns among citizens regarding the potential accumulation of litter on Harrison's streets during this period. It's a valid concern that could impact the cleanliness and aesthetics of the community. Residents are encouraged to maintain their civic responsibility by managing their waste properly during the street cleaning break. Garbage pick-up is not on a hiatus and residents are encouraged to make sure litter makes it to the public litter garbage cans on the Town of Harrison’s streets. Cali Carting, which handles the Town of Harrison’s garbage and recycling collection, will operate its normal garbage pick-up schedule, including street litter baskets.
We're interested in hearing from you. Do you agree with the decision to suspend street cleaning? Do you think this will lead to more litter in the streets, or is it a welcome break during the holiday season? Your feedback is valuable in assessing community needs and maintaining Harrison's charm and cleanliness.
