Solemn Tribute to Valor & Sacrifice: Harrison Honors Veterans Day 2024
Nov 06, 2024On Monday, November 11, 2024, the Town of Harrison, New Jersey, gathered to honor its veterans with a heartfelt Veterans Day ceremony led by Harrison Post 282 American Legion and Sergeant William Sawelson VFW Post 340. The observance, held at 11 a.m. at Veteran’s Plaza in Harrison Library Park, paid homage to the brave men and women who served in the armed forces, reflecting the town’s enduring respect and gratitude for those who have safeguarded America’s freedoms.
Harrison Veteran’s Plaza, a dedicated sanctuary for remembrance, stands as a tribute to local service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. With its peaceful surroundings and solemn markers, the plaza invites the community to reflect on the legacy of valor, reminding all who visit of the sacrifices that have shaped the nation’s history.
For decades, Harrison has maintained a proud tradition of honoring its veterans, a commitment upheld by the Harrison Post 282 American Legion and the Sergeant William Sawelson VFW Post 340. Their ongoing Veterans Day and Memorial Day observances not only pay respect to those who served but also serve as educational moments, ensuring that each generation remembers the cost of liberty.
Last year’s ceremony held a special focus on Vietnam veterans, celebrating the bravery of Harrison’s own Vietnam War heroes. Among those honored were Joseph P. Mobus, Lance Corporal Donald B. Scott, and Army Sergeant David Robertson. Joseph P. Mobus, a soldier with the 1st Cavalry Division, was remembered for his courage in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. Lance Corporal Donald B. Scott, a machine gunner with the 1st Marine Division, also earned the Purple Heart and other commendations for his ultimate sacrifice. Army Sergeant David Robertson, who served with distinction in the 4th Infantry Division, was recognized for his bravery, symbolized by awards like the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Over a decade ago, in a testament to the town’s dedication, Harrison’s Mayor Raymond J. McDonough and the Town Council honored these heroes by renaming Hill Street as Scott Mobus Place. This tribute serves as a lasting reminder of Joseph P. Mobus and Donald B. Scott, both of whom grew up on this street. Additionally, a commemorative plaque at Harrison High School celebrates Donald Scott’s legacy, underscoring his athletic prowess and selfless devotion to his country.
Through these memorials, the Veterans Day observance, and the stories of valor, Harrison continues to embody a deep appreciation for its veterans’ sacrifices. This gratitude extends beyond Veterans Day, ensuring that the bravery and contributions of heroes like Mobus, Scott, and Robertson are cherished every day.
