On July 3, 2024, at approximately 10 a.m., a pedestrian was struck by a car at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and the Route 280 Eastbound Ramp. The vehicle that hit the pedestrian left the scene of the accident, prompting immediate concern and action from witnesses and authorities.

Several witnesses called the Harrison Police Department to report the accident. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the pedestrian unconscious and promptly dispatched the Harrison Emergency Medical Service (EMS). Medical aid was administered on-site before the pedestrian was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

The Harrison Police quickly secured the accident scene and commenced a thorough investigation. This included photographing the area and interviewing available witnesses. Officers also reviewed footage from Harrison’s Town Wide Video Surveillance Cameras, which allowed them to identify the license plate of the vehicle that fled the scene. The vehicle was registered to a resident of Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

Harrison Police officers interviewed the vehicle's owner, who admitted to being the driver. She confessed to leaving the scene allegedly because she panicked and was unfamiliar with the area. She stated that she had attempted to return to the scene of the accident but had not been able to do so. As part of the investigation, her vehicle was impounded.

The pedestrian has since been released from the hospital. However, the Harrison Police have not yet disclosed the names of the pedestrian or the driver, nor have they specified any traffic violations issued to the driver.

This incident is not the first of its kind at this intersection. Almost a year ago, on August 27, 2023, the community of Harrison mourned the loss of 74-year-old resident John Ogiela, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle at the same intersection. These recurring accidents highlight a potential safety issue at the intersection of Harrison Avenue and the Route 280 Eastbound Ramp.

As investigations continue and more information becomes available, this article will be updated accordingly.
