The USA and Mexico are bidding together for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the host(s) of which will be decided in May of this year, so the match could carry added significance if the World Cup is awarded to North America,

In terms of competitive context, this game follows the USWNT's recent loss to Mexico in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup, where Mexico won 2-0, marking only their second victory against the USWNT in 43 matches. This adds an extra layer of anticipation as the USWNT looks to rebound and fine-tune its strategies before the Olympics. In 1999, the USWNT opened the 1999 World Cup in New Jersey with a 3-0 win over Denmark at the old Giants Stadium.  A crowd of 78,972 fans was on hand that day as Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, and Julie Foudy all scored to kickstart that monumental summer for women’s sport. The Red Bull area was not even built or thought of in 1999.  The Red Bull Arena construction started in 2007 and opened in 2010.
